The actor who shot to fame playing a butler in two 70’s and 80’s hit TV sitcoms has died of prostate cancer…
Robert Guillaume once said his roles as a butler in both “Soap” and its spinoff “Benson” were a way of “getting revenge” for all the black actors who had similar roles — but weren’t allowed to speak their minds.
Guillaume won Emmys for his TV roles. He also earned a Tony nomination for his work in the first all-black version of the musical “`Guys and Dolls.”
Robert Guillaume died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 89.
