“You’re going to feel some pain if you park on busy streets during rush hour and you’re going to be towed away and have to go recover your car in some far flung part of the city,” said Toronto Mayor John Tory as he announced a new crackdown on traffic congestion and gridlock underway until Friday.

Extra Toronto Police officers will be looking to ticket motorists who park illegally during rush hours – 7:30 to 9:30 in the morning and 3:30 to 6:30 in the afternoon.

Mayor Tory also explained the city is setting up “quick clear squads” to keep major roads clear of blockages. He is also promising full time traffic wardens will be at congestion hot spots by early next year.

“We’re going to now deploy people who are not police officers, traffic wardens let’s call them, and as soon as we get regulation from the province, which is imminent, we’ll get those people who are on the streets in 2018 early, to make these intersections work better,” Tory detailed.

The Mayor says the city also plans to install smart signals to monitor traffic flow and adjust the street lights.
