Twenty years ago today the world awakened to the news that Diana, Princess of Wales, was dead at the age of 36.
The princess died in the early hours of August 31, 1997 after her Mercedes, which was being pursued by paparazzi at the time, crashed in a Paris traffic tunnel while traveling at more than 100 kilometres per hour.
Floral tributes, photos and personal messages are being placed at the gates of Kensington Palace in London today.
Diana’s sons Princes William and Harry are not expected to take part in any engagements today. They paid tribute to their mother yesterday laying flowers in Kensington’s Memorial Garden.
