The Islamic State group claims it’s responsible for a van attack in Barcelona that officials say killed 13 and injured 80.

It happened along the popular Las Ramblas promenade, a tree-lined walkway filled with cafes, restaurants, vendors’ stalls, the city’s opera house and a baroque palace.

Police have two in custody.
Spain’s royal palace has condemned the attack, calling those responsible ”assassins, simply criminals who will not terrorize us.”
Meanwhile, troopers shot and killed a man who was in a car that struck two officers at a traffic blockade in
Barcelona.
No indication that it was related to the van attack.  The deadliest recent attack in Spain was March 2004, when terrorists bombed commuter trains in Madrid, killing nearly 200 and wounding over 1,800.
