No one else has confirmed it, but a Russian-American lobbyist claims he too was at a June 2016 meeting in New York with Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer that was viewed as part of a Russian government effort to help the Republican campaign.
Rinat Akhmetshin has confirmed he was there to The Associated Press.
Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and current White House senior adviser, and then campaign chair Paul Manafort were also at the meetin .
A spokesperson for Manafort’s declined coment, while a spokesperon for Kusher has not responded to media inquiries.
Akhmetshin says the Russian lawyer brought with her a plastic folder with printed-out documents.
He says he was unaware of their content and that it was unclear if they were left with Trump associates.
Akhmetshin describes the meeting as ”not substantive” and ”actually expected more serious” discussion and ”never thought this would be such a big deal.”
When a spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin was asked about the lobbyist’s possible participation in that meeting, he said ”We don’t know anything about this person.”
Akhmetshin has been identified in reports as a former Russian counterintelligence officer, but has denied ever serving as one.
