An Ontario Superior Court justice has dismissed a request to freeze the assets of Omar Khadr, less than a week after it was announced the former Guantanamo Bay prisoner received a financial settlement from Ottawa, reportedly worth $10.5-million.
But the judge called the request ”extraordinary”.
The request for an injunction came from the widow of American soldier Christopher Speer, killed in Afghanistan in 2002 and former soldier Layne Morris, who was wounded in the same firefight.
Speer’s widow and Morris were awarded $134-million U.S. in damages two years ago by a Utah court and have filed an application here to have that judgment recognized and enforced.
They’d asked the assets be frozen while that application’s heard.
