As it turns out, Highclere Castle, where much of the TV series Downton Abbey was shot actually holds the key to Canada’s Confederation.

Lady Carnavan, who lives in Highclere, discovered that fact while poking around a 150-year old book in the castle’s library.
She says three names struck and after a bit of research discovered that one of them was John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first Prime Minister, and a guest at the Castle while he and others drafted the British North American Act.

Canada’s High Commissioner to the UK, Janet Charette, says the news came a surprise to her and she’s looking forward to spreading the word.

Highclere Castle is open to the public for tours 65 days a year.

Downton Abbey airs on our sister station Vison TV.
