With summer now officially here, reach for the bug spray.
A just released national report on wild species in Canada shows there are 160 different types of blackflies and 80 kinds of mosquitoes – and most are flourishing !
Wild Species 2015 is the fourth version of a report on the general status of species in Canada that’s required every five years.
The report collected data from provincial and federal departments which monitor wildlife, assessing almost 30,000 of Canada’s 80,000 known species.
It lists 122 as being extinct or possibly extinct, including 39 kinds of insects.
Unfortunately no mosquitoes or blackflies are among them.
