U.S. President Donald Trump has tweeted that he’ll announce his decision on whether his country will pull out of the Paris Climate Accord during a Rose Garden event at 3 o’clock this afternoon.
He ends the tweet with his campaign slogan, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Indications from the White House yesterday suggest Trump is expected to withdraw from the agreement, which is aimed at reducing carbon emissions in an effort to curb global warming. But the president has also been known to change his mind on major decisions at the last minute. Trump campaigned for president on a promise to take the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement as a way to create jobs in coal and oil.
As for Canada’s role in the Paris Climate Accord, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna says the Canadian government remains committed to the deal.
“We certainly understand here in Canada that the environment and the economy go together and there’s a huge economic opportunity when it comes to clean technologies and innovation,” McKenna explained, “in addition to long term benefits for the environment.”
