The Trudeau Liberals are threatening to abandon a multi-billion dollar purchase of Boeing Super Hornet fighters if the Trump Republicans proceed with damaging trade action against Montreal-based Bombardier.
The warning shot came on the same day the U.S. administration officially started the countdown to the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The threat was prompted by an announcement from the U.S. Department of Commerce that it will investigate accusations from Chicago-based Boeing that sales of Bombardier’s new C-series jetliner constitute dumping into the U.S. market because the plane is subsidized by the Canadian and Quebec governments. The investigation could lead to punitive U.S. duties slapped on sales of the jet as early as July.
Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland fired back in a statement, warning that Boeing’s attempts to sell fighter jets to the Canadian government could be at risk if Boeing blocks the Bombardier jet from the U.S. market.
