Ontario nursing home residents will soon enjoy better, fresher food because of a funding boost from the governing Liberals at Queen’s Park.

A 67-cent a day increase goes into effect on July 1st. It raises the daily amount spent on each resident from $8.33 to $9, and is double the amount requested by long term care associations.

Outrage was expressed by listeners to Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer earlier this year, when it came to light that seniors in nursing homes receive less than inmates in Ontario who are fed on $9.73 a day.

The tight food budget has meant that many homes gave Ontario’s 77,000 nursing home residents processed meats, frozen vegetables and canned fruit.

Cathy Gapp of AdvantAge Ontario says this new funding will enable homes to buy local produce, fresh fruits and vegetables more often.
