Following a backlash over programming of Netflix films – the Cannes Film Festival says – beginning next year, only theatrically released movies will be accepted for its prestigious Palme d’Or competition.

The famous festival says it wants to “reiterate its support to the traditional mode of exhibition of cinema in France and in the world.”

For the first time this year – Cannes selected two films in its official competition from Netflix – which the National Federation of Film Distributors in France said were “endangering a whole ecosystem.”

In France, movies that don’t obtain theatrical release are prohibited from streaming – or being seen via subscription video on demand – for three years.
