Two Canadian universities have been chosen to participate in a competition to develop a self-driving car.

The University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo will compete against each other and six American schools – as they try to come up with a vehicle that can drive itself in an urban setting by the year 2020.

General Motors and engineering association S-A-E International  have launched the contest designed for undergraduate students –  called the AutoDrive Challenge.

Each school will get a Chevrolet Volt, GM’s new electric car, to work on.  Intel will provide the computers needed – and third parties will provide sensors.
