A celebrated Montreal scientist, recognized around the world for his ground-breaking research on HIV / AIDS, has died in a swimming accident in Florida.
(McGill University)
71-year-old Mark Wainberg was with family in a Miami suburb when he ran into trouble in the ocean.
Police say his son noticed his father was missing, swam out to him and brought him back to shore.
Wainberg was rushed to hospital where he died.
Police cannot confirm if he drowned or if he died from a medical condition.
Wainberg, an officer of the Order of Canada, is best known for his part in discovering the anti-viral drug 3TC, also known as Epivir and Lamivudine, at the height of the HIV / AIDS crisis in the late 1980s.
It’s used with other medications to treat infections caused by HIV.
He was head of AIDS research at Montreal’s Jewish General Hospital and the McGill University AIDS Centre.
Wainberg also served at president of the International AIDS Society between 1998 and 2000.
