Update on a story heard first on Zoomer Radio’s ”Fight Back”.

On February 1, host Libby Znaimer spoke with Tammy Carbino about her father, 86-year-old James Acker, who was beaten by a fellow long-term care resident at St. Joseph’s Villa in Dundas.

Tammy’s now reporting her father never recovered, his health’s steadily declined and that he may not make it to a hospice in time to receive palliative care.

The province’s investigation into the beating found the Villa failed to protect its residents from abuse and that the long-term care home violated several regulations. 

It was given until May 30 to comply.

Tammy calls the investigation a farce, accusing the government of simply shuffling papers.

Meanwhile, the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions blames the province and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for not protecting people like James Acker.

The union’s calling on the province to look deeper into the causes of nursing home violence, to learn from this case and to legislate a higher standard of care in such facilities.
