The government’s main man on marijuana says Canada Day 2018 should not be about legalizing pot – but about celebrating the country’s history.

Bill Blair, the parliamentary secretary to Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould – says he’s a proud Canadian who believes July 1st is a day to recognize the country’s birth “for that reason and that reason alone.”

Blair was responding to recent headlines saying marijuana would be legal by Canada Day next year – after legislation is introduced next week in the House of Commons.

As for the date – he says having the work done by next July is a reasonable goal for the government – but there are other dates on which the new law could be enacted.

Blair wouldn’t confirm that the legislation would be introduced next week –  only that the Liberal government will live up to its promise – to bring forward legislation this spring – saying the plan must include building a regulatory framework with the provinces and territories – to ensure appropriate tools, technology and regulations are in place.
