One of the most recognized voices and faces in Canada for decades has passed away.
Betty Kennedy was 91.
No cause given.
Ottawa born and raised, she got her start at the Ottawa Citizen newspaper.
When there was a strike at the paper, she was asked to host a radio show in an effort to keep subscribers.
CFRB radio took notice and hired her.
For 27 years, she hosted the ”Betty Kennedy Show,” and interviewed 25,000 guests.
And for 33 years she was the lone female panellist on CBC-TV’s current-affairs quiz show ”Front Page Challenge.”
Kennedy was inducted into the Canadian Broadcast Hall of Fame and Canadian News Hall of Fame and was also named an officer of the Order of Canada.
For a time she was a senator, appointed in June 2000 by then Prime Minister Jean Chretien, only to retired the following January when she reached the mandatory retirement age of 75.
