Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be practicing his best diplomatic skills as he meets today for the first time with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington.
The two leaders have spoken together on the phone a couple of times since Trump won the November presidential election.
But Trudeau has not directly commented on Trump’s controversial statements and actions, including his ban on citizens from seven Muslim majority countries which is now under judicial review. Trudeau instead has focused on their mutual interest in helping the middle class.
The two will meet privately in the Oval Office at about 11 o’clock this morning, before being joined by top advisors for broader talks on Canada-U.S. trade.
A variety of pundits, politicians and diplomats are urging Trudeau to use the meeting to focus on jobs and jobs dependent on trade, and to steer clear of talk about climate change.
They will also host a round-table discussion with women business leaders and entrepreneurs, as part of a task force that aims to keep professional women in the workforce.
A joint news conference is scheduled for 2pm and then the prime minister takes a flight back to Ottawa at 6pm.
