Premier Kathleen Wynne says there aren’t enough commuter options to justifying such a move.
Instead, starting in 2019, the share of the gas tax that goes to municipalities for transit, will rise from two-cents-per-litre to four-cents by 2021, however, the tax itself will not go up.
The move does not please Mayor John Tory, who call’s the decision ”paternalistic and shortsighted.”
”And it is time that we stop being treated, and I stop being treated, as a little boy going up to Queen’s Park in short pants to say ‘Please, could you help me out with something that I thought was in the city of Toronto Act that I could do’ and to be told ‘No, I’m terribly sorry.  Go away and come back some other day’ when houses are falling down and having to be closed up, transit needs are not being met, traffic is in chaos.  And that is just something that is a reality that has faced my predecessors, and it faces me now.  But I’m not giving up.”
Based on the amount of revenue Toronto received from the gas tax in 2016, the city would be in line to receive an extra $170-million-a-year as of 2021.
