NEW PROSTATE CANCER TEST MAY MAKE A BIOPSY UNNECESSARY

A new test might make it unnecessary for men to undergo a prostate biopsy to detect cancer.

Researchers are now suggesting using an MRI first, which could allow roughly one in four men to avoid a biopsy.

The scientists studied 567 men who were suspected to have prostate cancer but hadn’t yet been diagnosed.

The MRI actually had a better chance of determining that prostate cancer was not present than the ultrasound-based biopsy method commonly used in clinics.

In other words, when an MRI says there’s no clinically significant cancer, there’s a high probability that that assessment is correct.

You can ready about the study in The Lancet.
