A solution is being offered by the provincial Liberals at Queen’s Park to end the national log-jam over healthcare spending.

A Toronto Star report says the 10 year plan would see the federal Liberals agree to increase health transfers by 5.2 percent every year in exchange for provincial commitments to spend on “mutually agreed upon priority areas” such as mental health and home care services.

The report says what it would effectively do is take the $3-billion over three years that the Trudeau Liberals say they want to spend on those services and roll it into the federal transfer, then extend the spending over a decade, giving provinces the ability to plan properly instead of seeing funding dry up after a few years.

Ontario Health Minister Dr. Eric Hoskins is said to have broached the proposal with his provincial and territorial colleagues this past Friday in Ottawa before they met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and agreed it could be workable.

Trudeau delayed healthcare funding discussions until this coming Monday when provincial finance ministers meet. Health ministers have also been invited.
