Same-sex parents in the province and others who use assisted reproduction to conceive no longer have to adopt their own children.

The ‘All Families Are Equal Act’ ensures couples who use sperm donors or a surrogate are legally recognized as parents.

While it passed unanimously at Queen’s Park, nearly half of the PC caucus was absent for the vote, including new member 19-year-old Sam Oosterhoff.

The MPP for Niagara West-Glanbrook was eligible to join the Legislature Monday following his recent by-election win, but the government says in order to maintain the impression of a ”modern and inclusive party,” leader Patrick Brown delayed Oosterhoff’s swearing-in until at least Wednesday because of his opposition to Bill 28.

The Liberals claim Brown didn’t want his new member to vote against it after making his opposition known on social media.
