China is getting into the movie business – big time.
The government plans to build a $2 billion film studio – as part of an expansion of its cultural influence.
The studio will include a theme park and tourist attractions – as well as tie-ins with gaming and online entertainment.
Construction on the project is due to begin next year.
China is already the world’s second largest film market and home to the globe’s largest theatre operator, Dalian Wanda – which has bought up American media companies AMC Theatres and Legendary Entertainment.
It’s signature film studio “Hengdian World Studios” spans almost 7,000 acres.
