Social media went crazy with appreciation of her version, which was twice as long as the usual length of The Star-Spangled Banner.

This isn’t the first time 74 year old Aretha Franklin has astonished fans with an unexpected demonstration of enormous talent and vocal range.

In 1998, Franklin stepped in at the last minute for the ailing Luciano Pavarotti at the Grammy Awards and delivered a note perfect rendition of the aria Nessun Dorma, Pavarotti’s signature song.

Nessun Dorma has since become part of Aretha Franklin’s own repertoire. She recorded the aria on an album and performed it last year in Philadelphia for the Pope.
