Every day, 13 Canadians are hospitalized after taking pain-killing opiod medications such as oxycodone and morphine.

That according to a report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information and the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse.

Their study found opiod-related admissions to hospitals rose over 30% between 2007-08 and 2014-15.

While there was a 62% increase in the number of young people being admitted, older Zoomers accounted for nearly one-quarter of all hospital admissions for opiod overdoes – most of them accidental.

The results its felt will help reduce the stigma surrounding opiod use and addiction.

The deputy CEO of the Centre on Substance Abuse says it’s clear those experiencing harm are our parents, grandparents, colleagues, neighbours and young adults.
