Toronto’s Bladder Cancer Awareness Walk in Sunnybrook Park on Sunday September 25th was a huge success!

Donations are still being tabulated but, at last count, contributions have blown past the goal by more than 20% and will reach more than $170,000.

As part of this impressive total, Team Jane Brown (in memory of Jane’s mom Sandy, and sponsored by ZoomerMedia) has raised $6655 (11% more than the team’s $6000 goal) from generous donors, including many Zoomer Radio listeners.

“Support from the public has been incredible,” says Bladder Cancer Canada Executive Director Tammy Northam. “Clearly, Torontonians are becoming more and more aware of the desperate need for research into this little-known but devastating cancer.”

Last year, more than 8,000 Canadians were diagnosed with bladder cancer. It’s the 5th most common cancer in Canada and yet many Canadians have never heard of it and research into the disease lags behind most other cancers.

Last year’s Awareness Walk raised $500,000 in communities across Canada nationwide, with funds going towards Bladder Cancer Canada‘s mission to help patients and their support teams address the day-to-day issues of this disease, increase awareness of bladder cancer among the general public and medical community, and fund research into the diagnosis, treatment and elimination of bladder cancer.

This year’s national objective was $550,000 and Ms. Northam expects that target will be reached once the results of all the walks are tabulated.
