If all of Toronto’s 3,200 front-line police officers get body cameras, it’ll cost in the neighbourhood of $50-million in the first five years.

That’s one of the findings of a report following a year long police-cam pilot project where 85 officers across the city wore the cameras.

85% of police officers support the move as does 95 % of the public.  However, the price tag is steep considering the the police service has been asked to slash its budget.

The pilot project determined the cams are not without their shortcomings. The battery life lasted only about half of an officer’s 10-hour shift and corrupted video files when the cameras stopped in the middle of recordings.

The report was a surprise add on to yesterday’s police board meeting.  Mayor John Tory says they’ll look very carefully at the details and discuss the matter further at the next police services board meeting in October.
