Interest in the ill-fated Franklin expedition in the mid 19th century, was rekindled this week with the discovery of the second of Franklin’s ships in Canada’s north. Searchers believe they have found HMS Terror in a bay on King William Island in Nunavut. The wreckage of the other ship HMS Erebus (Air-eh-bus) was found two years ago.
The book “Finding Franklin” is the untold story of the 165 year old search.
Author Russell Potter told Zoomer and Classical FM Radio news that he’s been studying this for a long time and there are still plenty of mysteries to be solved. He says crew members from both ships tired to walk out of Canada’s north when the ships became locked in winter ice. Inuit legend tells of helping the men try to escape, but the mystery of what really happened remains.
Finding Franklin: The Untold Story of a 165 Year Search”, outlines the larger story and the cast of detectives that led to the discoveries to date. It’s published by McGill – Queen’s University Press.
