Comments made by an Alberta judge to a victim of sexual assault are making headlines. They are comments that could lead to him being removed from the bench.

The complainant, who’s identity is protected by a publication ban, says Justice Robin Camp “made me hate myself and he made me feel like I should have done something; that I was some kind of slut.” The woman made her comments at the judicial hearing yesterday for Camp, who is now being judged by the Canadian Judicial Council committee because of his remarks in the case. The committee is made up of three judges, who are council members and two senior lawyers.

Camp’s comments while he was a provincial judge in Calgary in 2014 led the Alberta Appeal Court to order a new trial for the man he acquitted. Transcripts show Camp questioned the woman’s morals, and asked her whether she could have kept her knees closed and said pain and sex sometimes go together. He suggested to the woman her attempts to fight off the man were feeble.

Camp’s lawyer says his client has taken steps to remedy his behaviour and is sorry for his failing.

If there is a decision by the Canadian Judicial Council to remove Camp from the bench, then it would go to the federal justice minister for a final decision.

Criminal lawyer Joseph Neuberger and Osgoode Law Professor Trevor Farrow will join Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer to discuss this case after the noon news.
