The C-R-T-C has issued a preliminary finding against a new Quebec law – that forces Internet companies to block user access to online gambling websites that aren’t authorized by the province.
The broadcast agency says federal law states that the C-R-T-C is the only body that can order Internet sites to be blocked – and, even then, only under exceptional circumstances.
Quebec has two weeks to respond in writing to the preliminary decision – which came after the Public Interest Advocacy Centre filed an application – asking the C-R-T-C to state its position regarding the new law.
Canada’s wireless telecom lobby has challenged Quebec’s legislation in court – calling it unconstitutional and a violation of federal law.
