By the end of the upcoming school year, the Peel District School Board plans to equip all 32 of its public high schools with gender-neutral washrooms.

The board’s director of communications, Brian Woodland, says the move is about inclusion in making transgender students feels safer.  Further, Woodland says the board is also going to begin discussions on whether the washrooms should be provided at middle schools.  The first high school to implement the gender-neutral washroom is Jean Augustine in Brampton.

The board’s theme for the year is “We Inspire Hope.”  It includes a request that students not wear athletic clothing representing the Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians or Washington Redskins.  Many see those team’s trademarks as offensive to aboriginals.  That request could become policy before the school year is over.
