Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce a major funding shot in the arm for the Toronto Transit Commission today.
Trudeau will announce a $500-million funding injection to cover the cost of a host of improvements including subway and bus repairs and creating additional bike parking at 40 TTC stations.
The $500-million is a downpayment on the $840-million the federal government has earmarked for the TTC. The funding includes helping the disabled by expanding and accelerating the installation of elevators at more stations and putting more accessible buses, streetcars and WheelTrans vehicles on the road.
The money is for infrastructure improvements and will still leave the TTC facing the mayor’s order to cut about $16 million from the operating budget.
