Three years after knee replacement surgery, Doreen Pechey has become the oldest ballerina to pass the Royal Academy of Dance’s Grade 6 exam.
Doreen Pechey
Pechey, 71, a semi-retired electrical engineer, says when she was young her family could not afford ballerina classes.
So when she began receiving her pension ten years ago, she decided to take classes.
When she visited her niece, a ballet teacher, in Canada, Pechey was persuaded to join a class and vowed to continue once she returned home.
She trains three times a week, having a barre installed in her kitchen so she can practice for 30-minutes each day.
Not only has ballet helped improve her fitness, Pechey credits it with helping with her knee replacement surgery.
