The people of France are reeling from yet another terror attack.
The death toll in Nice is at 84, after a man drove a truck into crowds of people celebrating the French holiday, Bastille Day, last evening.
French President Francois Hollande was quick to offer a statement in Paris.
“France is afflicted by this new tragedy. It is horrifying what happened. This monstrous act of using a truck to kill, deliberately kill, dozens of people, who were simply coming to celebrate July 14th. France is crying, it is afflicted, but it is strong and it will always be stronger,” Hollande said (in translation).
Hollande also said a state of emergency, in place since last November’s attacks in Paris that killed 130, would be extended.
The truck driver was shot dead by police.
According to the Associated Press, two French police officials are saying I-D papers found alongside the suspected attacker belonged to a 31-year-old Frenchman of Tunisian descent.
The man had previous misdemeanour convictions, but no known link to terror groups.
France will observe three days of mourning beginning tomorrow.
Prime Minister Trudeau has tweeted his sentiments about the attack, saying Canadians are shocked by the attack in Nice. “Our sympathy is with the victims and our solidarity with the French people.”
No Canadians are reported to be among the casualties.
