It’s good news for Canadians who rely on mail delivery for bills and medication.
Mail will be delivered today after Canada Post backed off on a threat to lock out its 50,000 unionized employees.
The crown corporation withdrew its lockout notice which would’ve gone into effect at 12:01 this morning, as talks resumed yesterday between Canada Post representatives and negotiators with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.
Megan Whitfield is the president of the Toronto local of CUPW. She told CP24 this morning, says there is a lot of relief with this latest development.
“Once we heard there wasn’t going to be a lockout, we felt completely optimistic and at ease, because our members were uncertain, the members of the were uncertain and all our members want to do is go to work, and provide the services that we continue,” Whitfield commented.
On Friday, CUPW had appealed to Canada Post for a 30 day truce.
Talks have been deadlocked on the issues of employee pension plans and wage parity.
But there could be more motivating this latest concilliatory move by Canada Post.
Parcel volumes are down more than 80 percent from major e-commerce customers and the number of letters in the system on Thursday was more than 80 percent fewer than the same day a year ago.
