An esteemed Canadian author is being remembered in a public funeral.

Austin Clarke died at the age of 81 – on June 26th in Toronto.

The pioneering black Canadian writer rose above childhood poverty in Barbados to achieve top literary honours and inspire generations of authors.

The service for the acclaimed writer is being held at the St. James Cathedral in downtown Toronto.

Clarke was known for exploring the Caribbean immigrant experience – in his 11 novels, collections of short stories, memoirs and two poetry collections.

His 2002 novel The Polished Hoe won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Trillium Prize and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize – which earned the author a private audience with the Queen.
