The heat-wave baking the GTA is causing concern at Metrolinx.

The company says it’s monitoring rails in the greater Toronto and Hamilton area  – because intense heat can cause safety issues – that could require temporary orders for trains to move more slowly at times – on GO Transit and UP Express services.

The transit agency says sustained high temperatures above 30 degrees Celcius can cause what it calls “sun kinks” in steel rails – and those bends in the rails can become a safety issue – if trains pass over them too quickly.
