Canada and the U.S. have produced a record amount of maple syrup this year – because of an extended season with low temperatures – and more people getting into the business or expanding their operations.

Our home and native land supplies about 70 percent of the world’s maple syrup.

Canada had a banner yield – with about 13.5 million gallons – a 23 per cent increase from the previous record set in 2013.

Quebec produces about 90 per cent of Canada’s syrup.

U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics released this month show the U.S. produced 4.2 million gallons, the greatest amount since records began in 1916.

The state of Vermont is by far the largest American producer. It yielded 1.9 million gallons this year – beating the previous record set in 2013 of 1.48 million gallons.
