The Commons has adopted a dying Liberal MP’s private member’s bill to make the anthem more gender-neutral.
Mauril Belanger, who has the incurable, fatal, neuro-degenerative disease known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, watched from his seat as third-reading ended with a voice vote loudly in favour of the bill.
It now awaits a formal vote Wednesday before moving to the Senate.
The Conservatives, who oppose it, have tried of number of procedural tactics to slow its passage but have run out of ways to drag it out.
With both the Liberals and New Democrats in favour, it’s now assured of passage.
Belanger’s bill would change the second line of ‘O Canada’ – ”true patriot love, in all thy sons command” to ”in all of us command.”
