Toronto’s world class public beaches officially open this weekend. Testing of water quality began on Wednesday June 1st and by world standards, Toronto has some of the most pristine beaches on the planet. This is verified by the Blue Flag awards that have been given to eight of Toronto’s 11 beaches.
The Blue Flag is an international eco-label awarded to beaches that achieve high standards in water quality and environmental management.
Since 2000, beach water quality for all of Toronto’s beaches has steadily improved. Sixteen years ago, the city’s beaches were posted as unsafe an average of 49 percent of the time. Last year, beaches were posted as unsafe just 12 percent of the time.
Toronto’s Blue Flag beaches are Hanlan’s Point, Gibraltar Point, Centre Island, Ward’s Island, Cherry, Woodbine, Kew Balmy and Bluffer’s Beach.
Water quality information is posted on the City of Toronto website.
