AWAD WINS AMAZON FIRST NOVEL AWARD

A collection of linked short stories, by a Montreal author, has won this year’s Amazon.ca First Novel Award.

Mona Awad’s critically acclaimed debut, “13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl”,  was awarded the prize and the $40-thousand that goes with it, at a ceremony last night in Toronto.

Awad was born in Montreal and is currently pursuing a PhD in creative writing and English Literature at the University of Denver.  At 37, she was this year’s youngest nominee.
The other finalists; Elizabeth Philips for “The Afterlife of Birds”; Mark Giles for “Seep”; Aaron Cully Drake for “Do You Think This is Strange?”; Karim Alrawi for “Book of Sands”; Judith McCormack for “Backspring”, each received $4-thousand.
