The government in Alberta’s declared a provincial state of emergency because of the raging forest fire that’s destroyed hundreds of homes in Fort McMurray. That’ll allow Alberta to request additional resources from outside the province.
The prime minister says the federal government has started to and will continue to help the region.
”Canada is a country where we look out for our neighbours and we are there for each other in difficult times and certainly in Fort McMurray, the difficult times they’re going through right now, is something that we’re going to unite around across the country.”
Justin Trudeau added residents should know Ottawa will be there when it’s time to rebuild.
He’s also urging any Canadians who want to help to do so through the Red Cross.
Meanwhile, the mayor of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo believes Fort McMurray will survive and come back even stronger.
Melissa Blake says the city’s already faced many challenges in meeting the demands of the oilsands industry. She thinks the blaze is one more obstacle that’ll be overcome.
