Rob Ford’s nephew, Michael Ford, says either he or his uncle Doug Ford will seek to represent the ward left vacant by the death of the Toronto city councillor and former mayor.

But by the sounds of it, it’s Doug Ford who’s ready to get back to city council.

“The gravy train’s in full swing right now down there. All the hard work that we did for the taxpayers gone down the drain. They’re travelling around the world on junkets all over the place, they’ve increased their office expenses, they’re going to be facing a $400-million budget pressured into going into next year. They’ve jacked up the budget like I’ve never seen,” Ford ranted to the CBC.

Doug Ford represented Toronto’s Ward 2 between 2010 and 2014 when Rob Ford was mayor. Michael Ford is currently a Toronto District School Board trustee.

Toronto Mayor John Tory says he strongly favours a by-election rather than an appointment to fill the seat, given that council is less than half way through the current term. City staff suggest in a report to council that a by-election could be held on July 25th.

Councillors will vote on how to fill the vacancy at their next meeting which begins on Tuesday May 3rd.

Rob Ford died on March 22nd, 18 months after he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer.
