Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is being pressured to take a leadership role in making sure major pipeline projects get approved.
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley was among those making presentations to Justin Trudeau and his ministers on Sunday at the start of a 3 day retreat cabinet retreat at a luxury resort in Kananaskis.
Notley is pushing Trudeau on what she sees as an urgent need for new pipeline capacity to carry Alberta energy to market, such as the Energy East project that would transport bitumen to Canada’s East Coast. This plan has received a lot of push back in Quebec.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the retreat will include a focus on Alberta, which is reeling economically from the plunge in oil prices.
“I’m glad to be back to talk about the challenges and opportunities faced by people here, but also, people right across the country. It’s a time for us to pull together, to take stock of what we’ve managed to achieve for the past six months, but especially to underline all of the hard work we have ahead of us,” Trudeau told reporters.
Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney is warning about the logjam facing major proposed pipelines. He told CTV’s Question Period on Sunday, regulatory delays may end up killing pipeline projects and is urging Prime Minister Trudeau to use his office to help clear the path for construction of these mega-projects that could generate long term jobs for Canada.
