Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould led things off by saying it’s never as simple as ”copy-and-pasting” the words from a court ruling, especially on as complex issue as this.
She says while there’ll always be diverse opinions, Parliament has to respect the court’s decision and listen to a variety of voices in order to decide what’s in the best public interest.
Wilson-Raybould maintains the bill is consistent with both the Supreme Court’s decision as well as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, adding the previous law, which banned assisted-death, went too far in restricting rights.
