Tech billionaire Sean Parker is putting $250-million toward cancer immune therapy, saying it’s at a crucial point and could benefit from research where cost is not an issue.

Immunotherapy, which enhances one’s immune system to kill cancer cells, is best known since former U.S. president Jimmy Carter was on an immune-based drug treatment when he announced last December he’s cancer free.

The new Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy in San Francisco will fund six American cancer centers with the hope of improving what it sees as slow progress in bettering cancer survival rates.

Parker, the co-founder of music file sharing service Napster and the founding president of Facebook, says he wants to make immunotherpay a front-line treatment.

Currently, it’s only approved as a treatment of last

resort, which Parker says means it’s only used after patients’ immune systems are destroyed by chemotherapy and radiation.
