The leaders of Ontario’s main political parties are to meet this afternoon (Monday) to discuss political fundraising reforms.
The conversation follows two weeks of opposition attacks over expensive and exclusive dinners for Liberal donors.
P.C. leader Patrick Brown says it’s outrageous that cabinet ministers have fundraising goals, as was reported in the media.
“The notion that the minister of finance, the minister of energy have fundraising targets. Every minister has a fundraising target. Charles Sousa has a fundraising target of $500,000. Ministers should be focused on doing their jobs, creating jobs,” Brown ranted.
Premier Kathleen Wynne has promised to introduce legislation this spring that would include a ban on corporate and union donations.
Wynne says she’ll ask the opposition leaders if they think by-election fundraising rules should be changed before she introduces broader legislation.
Current rules mean parties can raise far more during a by-election than they are allowed to spend.
There’s a pending by-election in the Toronto riding of Scarborough-Rouge River.
