Ontario will ban corporate and union donations to political parties by January 1st, 2017.
That announcement today from Premier Kathleen Wynne.
But Wynne says she’s unsure at this point if there should be a subsidy from voting taxpayers – to help political parties offset the drop in donations.
The premier says legislation will be introduced in May – and it will also impose maximum spending limits on third-party advertising – as well as reducing the maximum allowable donations from individuals – in the range of the federal limit – which is $1,500 a year.
Wynne announced the planned changes after meeting with Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.
They both called the gathering “disappointing.”
Brown went further – calling the meeting “a sham.”
He says it went off the rails as soon as he told Wynne the Tories would keep pressing for a public inquiry – into fundraising quotas of up to $500,000 for Liberal cabinet ministers.
Wynne also rejected the NDP’s call to have the chief electoral officer lead the review of political financing rules- but the premier said he would be the first person called – to testify about the government’s proposed legislation.
