It is a messy winter-like commute in the GTA and right across southern Ontario.

A clipper system has dropped between 10 and 15 centimetres of snow in our area. At Toronto’s Pearson Airport, 12 centimetres of snow has been recorded, the single biggest snowfall this season. The good news is that the bulk of the snowfall is finished and the clean up is well underway.

Hector Moreno of Toronto Transportation says usually snow clearing services ramp down at the beginning of April, but overnight, it was “all hands on deck.”

“We’ve been salting, multiple rounds of salt on the expressways, mains, collectors and local streets starting about 5pm last night,” Moreno explained.

Toronto Police recorded 104 collisions between 5pm yesterday and 5:30am today. Ontario Provincial Police have been called to more than 650 collisions in this storm.

Toronto Police constable Clint Stibbe says many motorists are simply driving too quickly.

“This morning when I was coming in, I was seeing individuals driving well over 100 to 120 kilometres per hour on snow covered roads…this is way too fast for this type of driving conditions,” Stibbe warned.

There are just 2 school related cancellation in the GTA. All Dufferin County buses are cancelled, but schools are open, except for those schools which are dependent on bus transportation. Peel District School board buses are cancelled in Caledon only.
