There has never been a judge on the Supreme Court of Canada from Newfoundland and Labrador. Now there’s two folks who are out to change that. The president of the province’s Law Society has teamed up with the Justice Minister who has already written a letter to the federal government on the matter. The note seeks to enlighten Ottawa about the number of eminently qualified jurists and practitioners there are on the East Coast. .
Legal experts caution that the federal government will likely choose race or language over geography when it comes time to replace Justice Thomas Cromwell of Nova Scotia. He retires in September.
